Moab - SUNDAY 10/4/2009

SUNDAY: Welcome the winds! Sunday morning, everyone but us packed up to head home, while Ron made some Jeep repairs, a couple of nuts tightened down and a few feet of parachute cord and hopefully that spring will stay put now!

After saying goodbye to Ryan and Sarah, the rest of us headed out to enjoy the Fins N Things trail. The kids seemed to enjoy taking turns on the four wheelers, and Debbie decided that riding in the jeep was much scarier than riding the ATVs! We ran the obligatory first section of the trail and then took a shortcut into the very last part that includes "Kenny's Climb" and "Frenchie's Fin," which are allegedly the steepest hills you can drive up on a slickrock surface without slipping back down. Afterward, we got some lunch, then Ben and Debbie headed home. Our family decided to check out the Steel Bender Trail. It was an incredibly beautiful trail with tons of extremely challenging rocky sections. It is probably the most difficult trail we have attempted thus far!

Eventually, we got to an obstacle called "The Fall" or "The Wall" (depends on who you talk to). Basically, as you head down a fairly steep hill, you come upon a section where there is a vertical rock "step" about 4 feet tall with a small pile of volleyball-sized boulders at the bottom of it. The boulders have been collected over time by those heading uphill, who stack them in various configurations to help them build a small ramp to climb "The Wall." The roadway at this point is just a few feet away from what appears from the driver's seat to be a cliff edge! It's not that bad from outside the vehicle. Ron kept getting out of the vehicle to look at the actual drop and to re-assure himself about the Jeep's ability to survive "The Fall." Then he would get back in the driver's seat, where all he could see was the hundred's of feet of air between him and the nearest solid stable ground. Eventually, women and children were evacuated from the vehicle. Finally, Ron succumbed and left his ego on the trail, packed up his trembling family, and turned around. This was right in the middle of the afternoon session of General Conference, but honestly, I don't think any of us heard a word of the talk or two that were given while we attempted to tackle the fwall.

Now, Moab's Jeep trails have a new obstacle called "The Nemesis Hill" by our family as that the previous "Nemesis" has been handily conquered time and time again. A couple of more inches of lift... some larger tires... we'll be back you cursed rock wall!!!

By the way, the picture down below is of Lori's Jeep on the OLD Nemesis, none of us had the Wherewithal to take pictures of the NEW Nemesis while we were there. However, an internet search yielded these pictures of the obstacle:

Oh yea, almost forgot, back at camp, the wind blew one of our tents down, drug the other tent ten feet from it's original location, buried all of the tent stakes underneath several inches of sand, and filled our sleeping bags and luggage full of sand as well. We hoteled it that night. Found a place with a much needed 24-hour-nerve-soothing-hot-tub. We also spent a good hour or two browsing the shops in town.
